Until he retired from Westminster, these diaries were all busy, busy, busy, packed with things done and things to do. They were singularly short on self-reflection.
But now, like King Lear on the blasted heath, he comes face to face with himself, as if for the first time. So what have all these millions and millions of words been for?

And some less predictable targets get it in the neck, too. The sweetest moments in these diaries, and the only times when Benn seems truly to feel that blaze of sunshine, are all with his family, whom he clearly adores. Before Christmas , he wraps presents for 28 family members. In the old days, he would never have recorded this sort of adverse comment in his diaries, which were really a form of glorified CV.
